Evidence-Based Geriatric Nursing Protocols for Best Practice
more...
3rd ed. 2008 As in the previous second edition (titled Geriatric Nursing Protocols for Best Practice... American Journal of Nursing Geriatric Book of the Year in 2003), we present assessment and interventions for common geriatric syndromes. Geriatric syndromes are increasingly recognized as being related to preventable iatrogenic complications, or those that occur as a direct result of medical and nursing care, causing serious adverse outcomes in older patients (see chapter 11, Iatrogenesis). We are also very happy to present 13 new topics and several new expert contributors. Many of these topics have been updated from the protocols that appear on the Web site of The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at NYU ( http://www.consultgerirn.org/). The new topics in this edition are as follows: · Dementia · Nutrition in Aging · Managing Oral Hydration in Older Adults · Oral Health Care · Age-Related Changes in Health · Sensory Changes · Iatrogenesis: The Nurse's Role in Preventing Patient Harm · Family Caregiving for Older Adults · Comprehensive Assessment and Management of the Critically Ill Older Adult · Fluid Overload: Identifying and Managing Heart Failure Patients at Risk for Hospital Readmission · Cancer and the Older Patient: Assessment and Intervention Strategies for the Acute-Care Nurse · Issues Regarding Sexuality in Older Adults · Substance Abuse
In this third edition.....guidelines are developed by experts on the topics of each chapter and are based on best available evidence. A systematic method, the AGREE Appraisal Process (see AGREE Collaboration, 2001; Levin,;Singleton & Levin), was used to evaluate the protocols in the second edition and identify a process to help us improve validity of the book's content. This systematic process, described in chapter 1, was developed to retrieve and evaluate the level of evidence of key references related to specific assessment and management strategies...to answer the clinical questions posed. The chapter authors rated the levels of evidence based on the work of Stetler et al. ( 1998) and Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt ( 2005). Chapter 1, Developing and Evaluating Clinical Practice Guidelines: A Systematic Approach, details the process ... the most important chapter reference for understanding the rating of the levels of evidence.

Hurst's The Heart
more...
12th edition, 2008, Valentin Furster, et al.
It is 41 years since The Heart was published as the first multidisciplinary and comprehensive textbook on cardiovascular disease. This 12th edition of Hurst's The Heart with 115 chapters written by preeminent and dedicated experts in each of the specialized areas has innovative features that separate it from prior editions.
1) The 12th edition includes authorship by many physicians from Europe, enabling multiple experts from several institutions and different countries to collaborate, thus providing a worldwide perspective on treatment of diseases such as hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathies, systemic hypertension, acute rheumatic fever, and neoplastic heart disease.
2) The previous chapter on hypertension has been divided into three more detailed chapters concerning epidemiology, pathophysiology, and diagnosis and treatment.
3) Chapters concerned with the human genome, cardiovascular practice guidelines, and evolving imaging technology for assessing coronary and non-coronary atherosclerotic disease and plaque characterization have been extensively revised. The most recent advances in pathophysiology and treatment for pulmonary hypertension and for the management of heart failure have been incorporated, and major advances including controversies in interventional cardiology are detailed.
4) Additional revised chapters focus on the diseases of the aorta, cardiovascular drug interactions, and surgical and non-surgical approaches to carotid arterial disease and peripheral vascular disease. In the chapter on treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, cardiovascular drug interactions have been updated to include the antiplatelet drugs, the statins, angiotensin 2 receptor blockers, and the new antianginal drug ranolazine. Chapter 105, Diseases of the Aorta, has been expanded and updated to include the medical treatment of acute aortic syndromes, and the chapter on cardiocerebral and cardiopulmonary resuscitation details the AHA modified approach to CPR.
5) The ACC/AHA Clinical Practice Guidelines and other alternative guidelines (such as those of the European Society of Cardiology) are more clearly elucidated in this edition than previously and are related to a specific chapter (Chapter 11) introducing this topic and defining several different classification systems.
6) The 12th edition of Hurst's The Heart includes appropriate classic and recent references, many updated just prior to publication with some still in press at the time of publication.

Orthopaedic Examination, Evaluation and Intervention
more...
2nd ed.,2008. from the Introduction .....
"Until the beginning of the last century, knowledge about the mechanism of healing and the methods to decrease pain and suffering were extremely limited. Although we may scoff at many of the interventions used in the distant past, many of the interventions we use today, albeit less radical, have still to demonstrate much more in the way of effectiveness... ...intervention strategies that are based on the best available evidence will have a greater likelihood of success with the least associated risk.... ... In this book, great emphasis is placed on the appropriate use of manual techniques and therapeutic exercise...Electrotherapeutic and thermal/cryotherapeutic modalities should be viewed as adjuncts to the rehabilitative process.
