The aim of the DIMRC web site is to provide access to quality disaster health information at all stages of preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery.

The initial phase of this web site focuses on NLM and NLM-supported resources and activities. The web site will expand to include other sources of authoritative disaster health information.

The National Library of Medicine's HSR Information Program, coordinated by the National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology, initiated the project. The first partner to join in populating the Web site was the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). NLM has received links from the National Cancer Institute, AcademyHealth, the Cecil C. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, and the Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D) at the Veterans Administration.

HSR Information Central is not an index of all health services resources on the Web. Rather, it contains selective links representing a sample of available information. Items are selected for their quality, authority of authorship, uniqueness, and appropriateness.

Updated code set, ICD10-CM, scheduled to be effective October 1, 2011.

ICD-10-CM is the universal diagnostic code set proposed to replace ICD-9-CM, Volumes 1 and 2. ICD-10-PCS is the proposed new procedure coding system that is being developed as a replacement for ICD-9-CM, Volume 3. The latter is the procedure coding system used for coding procedural services for hospital inpatients. As of now, CPT procedure codes will continue to be used to report procedures performed in the ED and other outpatient settings.

The Dartmouth Atlas Project uses a methodology, commonly known as small area analysis, which is population-based. The focus of small area analysis is on the experience of the population living in a defined geographic area or the population that uses a specific hospital. Other studies have used a "turnstile" approach, focusing on the number of procedures or hospitalizations in the hospital, without reference to the size of the population served.
